About the museum
The museum in Kętrzyn has been operating continuously since 26 February 1946. It was established on the initiative of Zofia Licharewa, who from 1945 had been securing historic objects in the surrounding churches and manor houses, and it is one of the oldest museums in Warmia and Masuria. For many years it was housed in the former prison building on ul. Powstańców Warszawy, where its exhibitions occupied just 116 m²; the first collections were made available to visitors in 1948. In 1987 the museum became a municipal institution, one of the first in Poland.
In May 1967 the collections were moved to the rebuilt Teutonic Order castle. The castle was built in 1360–1374, burned in 1945 and was rebuilt in 1962–1967. Today its interiors house the permanent exhibition “Sztuka dawna” (Art of Earlier Times), and visitors can view a multimedia model that tells the story of the town.
The museum collects regional objects, carries out archaeological and historical research and runs regional education classes, and every year it organises the Jarmark Średniowieczny (Medieval Fair). A branch of the museum is the Baszta (Tower) in the medieval town walls, and a separate exhibition “Kętrzyn – miasto na kolejowym szlaku” (Kętrzyn – a Town on the Railway Route) operates at the railway station.
