About the museum
The museum in Mrągowo was founded in 1969 on the basis of a Regional Room that had been operating since 1966. It was first called the Museum of the Mrągowo Land and was housed in the 18th-century Bosnian Guardhouse (Strażnica Bośniacka). In 1975 the collections were moved to the town hall, and in August of the same year the institution was transformed into a branch of the Museum of Warmia and Masuria in Olsztyn.
The museum is housed in the rooms of the neoclassical town hall on the market square, completed in 1825; in 1992–1996 the collections were temporarily moved out because of renovation of the building. The collections comprise archaeological, ethnographic, numismatic, historical and written exhibits, as well as folk and contemporary art.
The current permanent exhibition “Mrągowo i ziemia mrągowska od zarania dziejów po czasy współczesne” (Mrągowo and the Mrągowo Land from the Dawn of History to Modern Times), curated by Dr hab. Mirosław Hoffmann and Dr Sebastian Mierzyński, leads visitors from the tenth millennium BC to recent history. It shows, among other things, bone harpoons from the area of Piecki and Tłokowo, finds from the Roman Influence period, and the Nidajno hoard, the largest find of its kind, located furthest to the north-east. The archaeological part occupies three rooms and is the largest exhibition showing the collections of the Archaeology Department of the Museum of Warmia and Masuria.
