About the museum
The water tower in Giżycko was built in 1900 in the neo-Gothic style, entirely of red brick. Its characteristic dome housed a balancing reservoir for about 200 m³ of water, made of galvanised sheet metal to a design by the engineer Otto Intze. The tower supplied the town's residents with running water until 1996, when the municipal water network was modernised.
After it ceased operation, the building was bought by a private owner who renovated it. The top of the dome was extended with a modern viewing terrace that harmonises with the architecture of the tower. Inside, a local “mini-museum” and a café were created. The coats of arms of Masuria and of the town have been preserved above the entrance.
The exhibition consists of documents, photographs and small objects showing the daily life of former residents of Giżycko and the surrounding area. The top level, at 162 m above sea level, is reached by 129 steps, and there is also a lift.
