About the museum
The Muzeum Mazurskie w Owczarni was founded by Aleksander Puszko, who in 1995 bought a plot with the buildings of a former estate, renovated them and opened the museum on 1 July 1996. He runs it together with his sister Małgorzata Puszko-Krzywicka: he looks after the material culture of Masuria, she after its spiritual culture.
The museum is housed in a 19th-century residential building, a so-called czworak, which imitates a wooden Masurian house and has a black kitchen with an open hearth. Eleven rooms with a total area of about 130 m² present around 870 exhibits: tools for processing flax and grain, wickerwork, furniture, household items, books, maps and militaria from both World Wars. About 80% of the collection comes from Masuria and 20% from the Vilnius region (Wileńszczyzna).
Visitors walk through interiors furnished as if they were lived in, including the living room, the bedroom, an interwar kitchen and a guest room with portraits of Prussian kings. The hosts guide visitors around the museum; they offer standard tours as well as themed tours, for example on the history of the region, culture and religion, Masurian furniture making and farm work.
