Twierdza Boyen

Prussian 19th-century fortress between Lake Niegocin and Lake Kisajno in Giżycko, visited along marked trails and through exhibitions in the former buildings.

Opening hoursAdmission 25 zł

About the museum

The fortress was built on a narrow isthmus between Lake Kisajno and Lake Niegocin, to close the passage through this strait. It is a six-bastion artillery fort on a hexagonal plan, with four gates and a Carnot wall 2,303 m long. The foundation stone was laid on 4 September 1844; in 1846 the fortress was named after the Prussian minister of war Hermann von Boyen, and the works continued until the mid-1850s.

In the First World War the fortress served as a concentration point for German troops, and in August 1914 Russian units advancing to aid the attack on Olsztyn were halted before its fortifications. During the Second World War it housed a hospital and a German military intelligence centre. At the end of January 1945 the fortress was taken by Soviet troops.

After the war the facility was used by the Polish army for about twelve years, and later food-industry plants operated here, most of which were liquidated after the political changes. In 1975 it was recognised as a monument and opened to tourists together with a small museum. Today it is the largest monument in Giżycko; it can be visited independently along marked trails or with a guide, and exhibitions operate in the former buildings: the Powder Laboratory, the Stable with the Coach House and the Gunsmith's Workshop.
