About the museum
Enthusiasts of the culture of the Native Americans of the Great Plains began as a reenactment group within the Polski Ruch Przyjaciół Indian (Polish Movement of Friends of the Indians). Reproducing costumes and everyday objects turned into collecting originals, and the collection kept growing until it became the largest private collection of original Native American exhibits in Poland.
They began in 2003 with an Indian Village (Indiańska Wioska) in Wolisko in the Borecka Forest, where they presented replicas of costumes, weapons and ceremonial objects in a dozen or so tipis. In 2006 they moved to a farmstead of almost ten hectares in Spytkowo, a few kilometres from Giżycko, with more than century-old post-German buildings.
Today the site consists of two parts: a museum in a stone Masurian building, which shows original craftwork, costumes, weapons, toys and ceremonial objects, and an open-air model of a Native American village with several full-size tipis and ceremonial structures such as a sweat lodge and a burial platform. Visits are led by guides, and the offer also includes a Native American shooting range and workshops.
