About the museum
The Muzeum Kultury Ludowej w Węgorzewie (Museum of Folk Culture in Węgorzewo) has existed since 1991, although its collections began to be gathered as early as the 1960s, when a group of regionalists collected memorabilia of local culture. Since 2006 the institution has been run by the self-government of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.
The museum's seat is a manor house on the outskirts of the town, dating from around 1737. Next to it lies the Park Etnograficzny nad Węgorapą (Ethnographic Park on the Węgorapa), whose beginnings go back to 1994, when a fire station and a smithy were set up there. Today the park contains relocated timber arcaded houses from Krzyżewo and Woźnice, farm buildings from the early 19th century, a residential house from the second half of the 19th century and a half-timbered smithy from Zabrost Wielki. Some of the buildings serve as workshops for dying crafts: weaving, pottery and paper-flower making.
The collections include everyday objects, agricultural tools, textiles and clothing, ritual props, and folk art of Masuria and Warmia. There are also paintings by Tymoteusz Muśko, Easter eggs (pisanki), paper cut-outs (wycinanki), old postcards of Masuria and archaeological tiles from the 16th–19th centuries.
