About the museum
The museum is housed in the palace at Winiary in Warka, where a manor house already stood at the beginning of the seventeenth century. Around 1689 the Lithuanian deputy chancellor Stanisław Antoni Szczuka built a new palace to a design by Augustyn Wincenty Locci. In the eighteenth century the estate belonged to Józef Pułaski, the father of Kazimierz, and its last private owner until 1945 was Count Wacław Godziemba Dąmbski. After the land reform the building served as a secondary school, and in 1951 the Muzeum Regionalne PTTK Powiatu Grójeckiego was opened in it.
The idea of a museum dedicated to Kazimierz Pułaski goes back to the pre-war period, and an important impetus was the celebration of the 200th anniversary of his birth in 1947. The Council of Ministers adopted a resolution establishing the museum on 18 January 1961. A general renovation was carried out in 1962–1966, and in January 1967 the institution began its activity. It focuses on Polish-American themes and on emigration to the United States.
The permanent exhibition “Kazimierz Pułaski i zasłużeni Polacy w USA” (Kazimierz Pułaski and Distinguished Poles in the USA) shows the life and work of Pułaski and the profiles of Poles who made their mark on the United States, including Tadeusz Kościuszko, Helena Modrzejewska and Ignacy Jan Paderewski. The collections include furniture, paintings, textiles, clocks, weapons, silverware, porcelain, documents, maps and early printed books. Since 2015 a multimedia exhibition, “Warka – miasto dotknięte historią” (Warka – a town touched by history), has been running on the upper floor. The park belonging to the museum is open every day.
