About the museum
The Combat Open-Air Museum of the 1st Polish Army in Mniszew was created on the initiative of the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Sites and the Main Political Directorate of the Polish Army. The design was prepared by Witold Wiśniewski and Krzysztof Brzeziński, and the works were carried out by soldiers of units of the Warsaw Military District. It was opened at the end of 1977.
The site commemorates the fighting of the units of the 1st Polish Army on the Warka–Magnuszew bridgehead. On 9–12 October 1944 the positions of the 3rd Pomeranian Infantry Division named after Romuald Traugutt and of the 1st Warsaw Independent Cavalry Brigade were located here.
The open-air museum consists of three parts: a monument to the heroes of the fighting by the road, a company strongpoint with trenches and dugouts, and an exhibition of combat, engineering and sapper equipment at the battle positions. Outdoors stand, among other things, T-34-85 tanks, guns, howitzers and anti-aircraft guns. In the new building of the Centre of Culture and Historical Tradition an additional exhibition of military collections is shown, and the open-air museum hosts annual meetings and historical picnics.
