About the museum
The museum is housed in the building of the Centrum Edukacji, Rekreacji i Promocji Miasta Słupska “Leśny Kot” (Słupsk Centre for Education, Recreation and City Promotion “Leśny Kot”) in the Lasek Północny. The building was erected in 1912 as a modern restaurant called Waldkater (“Forest Tomcat”), with a ballroom and a hotel, and was one of the town’s favourite places for leisure. After the war it served as a sanatorium, and from the 1950s a state tuberculosis preventorium operated here. From 1981 the building was run by a university, today the Akademia Pomorska (Pomeranian University). In 2010 private investors bought the property and carried out a thorough renovation.
The Muzeum Miasta Słupska (Słupsk City Museum) opened in April 2012. It is a private institution, run in cooperation with the Stowarzyszenie Przyjaciół Ziemi Słupskiej (Association of Friends of the Słupsk Region). In two of the three rooms, collections on the history of the town up to 1945 are shown: postcards, maps, photographs, medals and coins, and souvenirs of industry and crafts, including brewing, dairying (together with the “Słupski chłopczyk”) and distilling. Separate exhibitions are devoted to the German 5th Hussar Regiment and to Heinrich von Stephan, one of the founders of the Universal Postal Union.
The third room tells the post-war history of Słupsk and related topics: the Szkoła Policji (Police School), the Festiwal Pianistyki Polskiej (Festival of Polish Pianism) and the Karczma Słupska.
