About the museum
The Muzeum Misyjne in Krosno is run by the Zgromadzenie Sióstr Misjonarek św. Piotra Klawera (Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of St. Peter Claver) and is housed in its convent at ul. Łukasiewicza. The institution was founded in 2002. The tradition of missionary museums in the congregation goes back to the time of its foundress, who prepared the first ethnographic and missionary exhibitions.
The collection includes about a thousand ethnographic and travel objects from Africa, Asia, Australia and Oceania, and Latin America. These are costumes, ornaments, weapons, musical instruments and everyday objects, as well as products made of straw, palm leaves, wood and leather. Among the most interesting exhibits are a figurine of Our Lady of La Vang from Vietnam and a painting of Our Lady of Częstochowa made from butterfly wings.
The permanent exhibition “Podróż przez kontynenty” (Journey Through the Continents) shows how people live, among other places, in Brazil, Vietnam and on the Tonga islands, and includes the story of the magazine “Echo z Afryki” (Echo from Africa). The museum serves the study of cultures and the history of missions, formation and educational meetings, and organises museum lessons for children and young people. Once a year, during the Museums Night, it prepares an evening programme with trying on costumes and activities for children.
