About the museum
The official founding date of the Krosno museum is 22 July 1954. The initiative was taken in 1950 by the Krosno branch of the Polskie Towarzystwo Turystyczno-Krajoznawcze (PTTK), and three years later the town authorities made premises in the Bishop’s Palace available to the museum. Since 2000 the institution has been called Muzeum Podkarpackie w Krośnie (Subcarpathian Museum in Krosno).
The seat is in the former Palace of the Przemyśl Bishops in the old town; the building dates back to the fourteenth century, and the entrance leads through a gate and a historic portal from the beginning of the seventeenth century. The museum also includes the townhouse of the Towarzystwo Mieszczańskie “Zgoda” (Burghers’ Society “Zgoda”) at ul. Piłsudskiego 14, the Dom Mazurkiewiczów with studio glass storerooms, and the Karpacka Troja archaeological open-air site in Trzcinica.
After a major renovation, the museum reopened its permanent exhibitions in a new form. Visitors learn about the history of settlement in the Subcarpathian region from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages, the history of Krosno and the region, Poland in emigration, the art and weapons of Japan, and the glass of the Subcarpathian glassworks. The museum is proudest of its exhibition on the history of lighting, which has one of the most valuable collections of kerosene lamps in Europe.
