About the museum

The Muzeum Parafialne w Szufnarowej (Parish Museum in Szufnarowa) was founded in 1996 by the parish priest, Father Bronisław Domino, with the help of his brother Antoni and local residents. The priest gathered memorabilia that parishioners handed over, to rescue them from oblivion and pass them on to younger generations. The collection was given the name “Jak żyli i pracowali nasi przodkowie” (How Our Ancestors Lived and Worked), and in 1996 Father Domino received the title “Mecenas sztuki ludowej” (Patron of Folk Art).

After the founder's retirement, interest in the museum declined. In 2009–2012, thanks to EU funds and the work of local enthusiasts, the building next to the church was renovated, shelving was made and a new exhibition was organised, and in August 2013 the museum reopened in its new form.

The memory room (izba pamięci) consists of three rooms and an attic. In the first, the interior of a village cottage has been recreated with a bed, a cradle, a sideboard and a kitchen; the second contains a school classroom from the 1950s–60s; and the third is a craft room with tools for processing flax and hemp and a weaving loom from 1937. The collection, numbering about 3,000 exhibits, also includes sacred objects and technical antiquities, and in the adjoining shed there are a sledge, a fire engine and agricultural machines.
