About the museum
The beginnings of the collections go back to 1959, when Zygmunt Leśniak, a teacher at the Strzyżów secondary school, began to gather memorabilia handed over by pupils and their families. Over the following decades the collection changed its seat several times: it was housed in the school cellars, in a townhouse at Rynek 28 and in the former manor house of the Dydyński family at ul. Modrzewiowa 1A. From 1971 the Społeczne Muzeum Regionalne (Community Regional Museum) operated under the care of the town authorities and the Towarzystwo Miłośników Ziemi Strzyżowskiej (Society of Friends of the Strzyżów Land).
The present institution, the Muzeum Samorządowe Ziemi Strzyżowskiej (Local Government Museum of the Strzyżów Land), was established by a resolution of the Town Council in 2011 and took over the collections of the community museum. Since 17 May 2014 its seat has been the historic townhouse at ul. Łukasiewicza 10, built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and inhabited until the Second World War by residents of Strzyżów of Jewish origin. The museum is a municipal cultural institution of the Gmina Strzyżów.
The collections number several thousand exhibits in the fields of history, archives, material culture, militaria, archaeology, art, palaeontology and ethnography. In the eight rooms of the main building visitors learn, among other things, about the fates of the region's inhabitants during the Second World War, the former municipal authorities together with a reconstructed interior of a burgher house, drawings by Wojciech Weiss, memorabilia of Professor Franciszek Chrapkiewicz, and monuments of folk culture. The museum also includes branches: the Galeria Miejska (Municipal Gallery), a bunker tunnel from the Second World War, and an exhibition on the Jews of Strzyżów in the former synagogue.
