About the museum
The first attempts to establish a museum in Krotoszyn were made in 1913 and 1926, without success. The Muzeum Ziemi Krotoszyńskiej (Krotoszyn Land Museum) was finally founded in 1957 on the initiative of the local branch of PTTK, and its first exhibition of memorabilia opened on 27 March 1957 in a wooden arcaded house at ul. Koźmińska. Until 1969 the institution operated thanks to the voluntary work of regional enthusiasts.
In 1969 the collections were moved to the Baroque former Trinitarian monastery building from around 1733, where the museum operates to this day. Under the direction of Hieronim Ławniczak, the number of objects rose from about 260 to more than 2,750; today the collections comprise more than 6,000 objects from archaeology, history, ethnography and art.
The permanent exhibition on the first floor occupies six halls and a corridor of about 370 m². It has three parts: the history of Krotoszyn from prehistory to the present, the folk culture of the Krotoszyn Land in the 19th and 20th centuries, and an art gallery in the corridor. More than 1,300 museum objects are shown there. Several times a year the museum also holds temporary exhibitions, usually on the ground floor.
