About the museum
The museum was founded on 6 November 1911 together with the Olkusz branch of the Polish Society of Tourism and Sightseeing (Polskie Towarzystwo Krajoznawcze), and it is one of the oldest regional museums in the country. It is run by the PTTK branch in Olkusz, and its patron is Antoni Minkiewicz, who was associated with its activities.
The collections are displayed in two rooms of the tenement house at Rynek 20, known as the “Batorówka”. The building is considered the oldest secular structure in Olkusz (14th–16th century), and according to legend King Stefan Batory stayed in it.
The exhibition includes, among other things, a medieval “miecz katowski” (executioner's sword) from the turn of the 13th and 14th century, lithographs by Napoleon Orda, mining-themed paintings by Władysław Jastrzębski and portraits of the Olkusz gwarki (miners), old mining tools and miners' lamps, folk costumes and figures from roadside shrines, minerals, ammonites and a mammoth tooth found near Kroczyce, coins, maps and photographs. The museum also holds banners, including that of the Merchants' Congregation from 1924, and products of the Olkusz Enamelled Ware Factory (Olkuska Fabryka Naczyń Emaliowanych).
