About the museum
The origins of the museum go back to the 1960s, when members of the Towarzystwo Miłośników Ziemi Kościańskiej (Society of Friends of the Kościan Land) began to plan an institution to collect memorabilia of the region. In 1976 a museum room was opened in a tenement house on the Market Square, and in 1981 the town authorities decided to establish a museum, which began operating in April 1982. In 2005 it was named after the regional historian Dr Henryk Florkowski.
Today the museum occupies most of the rooms in the town hall, which dates from the late 18th century, and its exhibitions are on the first, second and third floors. Over its forty years of activity it has organised more than 260 temporary exhibitions and numerous cultural events.
The permanent exhibitions, which use multimedia, tell of the prehistory and archaeology of the town; of the “royal town of Kościan”, with a multimedia model from the early 17th century; of the 19th century; of the heroes of 1918–1919; of the Second World War; and of the interwar period. The museum is gradually adapting its exhibitions to the needs of people with special requirements.
