About the museum

Krokowa is the ancestral seat of one of the oldest Pomeranian noble families, the Krokowski (von Krockow), known from documents from the end of the 13th century. In 1782 the estate was bought by Countess Luiza von Krockow, who rebuilt the palace and laid out a landscape park that was famous throughout 18th-century Europe. In 1791–1792 the philosopher Johann Gottlieb Fichte lived here as a tutor. The last owners left Krokowa in 1945.

After the war the palace housed a state farm and municipal institutions, and the building gradually fell into disrepair. On the initiative of Albrecht von Krockow and the commune authorities, the foundation “Europejskie Spotkania” (Kaszubskie Centrum Kultury Krokowa, Kashubian Culture Centre Krokowa) was established in 1990 and rebuilt the castle. The restoration work was completed in 1994, and the renovated interiors housed a hotel, a restaurant and a museum.

The museum presents, in the spacious rooms of the castle, the exhibition Archivum Crocovianum on the history of the Krockow family, with information boards, paintings, books and original documents. The tour also covers the period rooms and the castle park, and the foundation runs workshops, concerts and museum meetings devoted to Kashubian culture.
