About the museum
The museum was founded in 1975 as the Muzeum Osadnictwa Wojskowego (Museum of Military Settlement) on the initiative of the town authorities, the Związek Bojowników o Wolność i Demokrację (Union of Fighters for Freedom and Democracy) and the Dolnośląskie Towarzystwo Społeczno-Kulturalne (Lower Silesian Socio-Cultural Society). The solemn opening took place on 12 October. Initially it documented the settlement of the Recovered Territories; from 1982 it also collected materials on the history of Lubań and the region, and it has carried its present name since 1993. It is a municipal unit, with its main seat in the Renaissance town hall of 1539–1544 on the market square.
On the ground floor of the town hall is the exhibition “800 lat Lubania”, opened in 2020, with models of monuments, the history of the Battle of Lubań of 1945, the story of the military settlers and finds from the well on the market square. The exhibition “Sztuka i rzemiosło” (Art and Craft) presents products from Lusatia and Silesia. On the first floor is the reconstructed Salon Erny Brauns, an interior of a flat from the 1940s with original objects belonging to the former German residents of the tenement house.
The third permanent exhibition, “Minerały Zachodnich Sudetów” (Minerals of the Western Sudetes), is on the second floor at the Wieża Bracka, with specimens from the Izera Mountains and Foothills and the Karkonosze, including lubanite and calcites from Grabiszyce. The Wieża Bracka, an eight-storey basalt tower 45 m high, is open to visitors on a separate ticket. The museum co-organises the Sudecki Festiwal Minerałów (Sudetes Mineral Festival) and takes part in Noc Muzeów (Museums Night).
