About the museum
The open-air museum in Gryfice began to form spontaneously at the start of the 1970s, when steam locomotives were set aside on a track next to the former engine shed. Thus the Stała Wystawa Pomorskich Kolei Wąskotorowych (Permanent Exhibition of the Pomeranian Narrow-Gauge Railways) came about; its initiator was Zdzisław Kopera. It was officially opened in 1978 on a site adjoining the locomotive shed.
In 1987 an area of about 6,000 m² next to the narrow-gauge station was acquired and became the open-air museum grounds. The exhibition belonged in turn to the structures of the Railway Museum in Warsaw and, from 1999, to the local government of the Mazovian Voivodeship. In April 2010 the open-air museum was incorporated into the National Museum in Szczecin, and the owner of the collection became the local government of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship.
The exhibition presents the rolling stock that ran on the network of West Pomeranian branch railways. This network, stretching from Kołobrzeg in the north to Stargard in the south, was, within Poland’s postwar borders, a phenomenon of European scale in terms of the length and density of its lines. Visitors will see historic steam locomotives, carriages and other railway equipment, and learn about bridges, stations and the technology of narrow-gauge railways.
