About the museum
The castle in Sieraków was built around 1397, or shortly afterwards, for the Nałęcz family; its builder is said to have been the Poznań voivode Maćko Borkowic. From 1450 it belonged to the Górka family, from 1570 to the Rokossowski family, and in 1591 it was bought by Jan z Bnina Opaliński. After a fire around 1600 the castle was rebuilt and enlarged; in 1609 Krzysztof Opaliński, later Poznań voivode, was born here.
Today the museum, run as a district cultural institution, is housed in the rebuilt south wing of the former Opaliński Castle. The exhibition occupies three levels: the ground floor and the first and second floors. The offices and a toilet are in a separate administrative building.
The permanent exhibitions show the castle halls and memorabilia of the former owners. The Sala Reprezentacyjna (Reception Hall), reconstructed on the basis of wall remains and descriptions from the 18th century, recalls the former dining room. The Sala Łukowa (Voivode’s Study) displays documents and maps connected with the Opaliński and Leszczyński families, and a 16th-century tiled stove. In the chapel-mausoleum, some of the most beautiful 17th-century sarcophagi in Poland are displayed.
