About the museum
The Muzeum Ziemi Rawickiej (Rawicz Land Museum) was established by resolution of the Presidium of the District People’s Council in 1971 and was solemnly opened on 13 December 1973. From the beginning it has been housed in the historic town hall on the market square in Rawicz. It is a local government cultural institution subordinate to the gmina of Rawicz. The first exhibition covered three rooms: the history of the town and district, an archaeological room and an ethnographic room.
An important part of the collections is the cadet department, which began with an exhibition of souvenirs in 1979. The collection on the Korpus Kadetów nr 3/2 (Cadet Corps No. 3/2) in Rawicz numbers about 850 exhibits and archival items and, according to the museum, is the largest such collection in Poland. The Izba Kadecka (Cadet Room) was opened in 1989, and since 1992 it has borne the name of Lieutenant Colonel Jan Kamiński. In the early 1980s an exhibition on the kurkowe (marksmen’s) shooting brotherhoods was also shown.
After the renovation of the town hall in May 2018, a new permanent exhibition was opened. It includes the ethnographic, old crafts, brotherhood, cadet, Stanisław Kukla and portrait rooms, and the historic study of the mayor. The museum organises the Biennale Sztuki Europejskiej (Biennale of European Art, since 2001) and the cycle Rawickie Mosty Sztuki (Rawicz Bridges of Art, since 2011), and since November 2018 it has run a Tourist Information Point.
