About the museum
The Osada jaćwiesko-pruska (Yotvingian-Prussian Settlement) in Oszkinie is a private eco-tourism institution in the form of an open-air museum, recreating buildings of the culture of the Yotvingians (Jaćwingowie) and the Prussians. The buildings cover about eight hectares, mainly in forest, and have been built since 2001 with funds from the owner, Piotr Łukaszewicz.
Traditional techniques are used in construction: log houses built without nails, fences, watchtowers, palisades, gates, stone bridges, moats and ponds. On the clearings stand erratic boulders engraved with the names of the tribes in several languages, and a stone altar; the stage set is meant to convey the life of the tribes on the Polish-Lithuanian frontier.
In season, staff in traditional costumes serve regional dishes, and the settlement holds regular festivals, such as Noc Kupały (Kupała Night). The settlement was recognised in the “Sposób na Sukces” (Way to Success) competition.
