About the museum

The idea of an open-air museum in Puńsk appeared in 1986, and in its present form the museum has operated since 1992. It is looked after by the Dom Kultury Litewskiej (Lithuanian Culture House) in Puńsk, whose task is to cultivate Lithuanian traditions and customs and to document the heritage of the region.

The homestead recreates the farm of a moderately prosperous farmer from the Sejny region from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The cottage, cowshed and granaries were moved from the nearby village of Wojtokiemie, and the barn was reconstructed on the basis of residents’ accounts. The buildings are arranged in a quadrangle around a yard with a well and a crane, and the whole is complemented by a fence of wooden pales, an iron horse-powered mill (kierat) and a village garden.

In the three-room cottage you can see a tall clay stove, a loom, a spinning wheel, a cradle and a dowry chest. In the cowshed there are, among other things, troughs carved from tree trunks, a threshing machine and decorative sledges, and in the granary there are tools, baskets, shoe lasts and old everyday objects. In the barn, performances of the Festiwal Teatrów Stodolanych (Barn Theatres Festival) and concerts of folk music take place.
