About the museum
In 1982, a major fire destroyed the building of the Câmara Municipal de Mértola (town council), which had been built at the end of the 19th century. During the reconstruction work in 1984, remains of a house from the Roman period, dating from the 1st to 4th centuries, were identified. The building design was changed so that the structures of the old house could be preserved in the basement and the archaeological objects found could be displayed.
The branch opened in 1988 and was refurbished in 2012 and 2017. It displays architectural elements, funerary inscriptions, amphorae, ceramics, glass and metal objects, with a focus on two coins minted in Myrtilis, the Roman name of Mértola. Of the known area of the house, the main feature is the central area, the impluvium, where a sculpture of a magistrate in a toga stands.
The Casa Romana is one of the fourteen branches of the Museu de Mértola – Cláudio Torres, which installs its collections in the places where the finds were made and makes the village itself a museum. The branch is on Praça Luís de Camões, next to the Paços do Concelho.
