About the museum
The Sacred Art branch is housed in the former Igreja da Misericórdia (Church of Mercy), built in the 16th century at the Porta da Ribeira, the main entrance to the old port of Mértola. For centuries this was one of the busiest places in the village, where the large houses of the local merchants stood.
The building has long since stopped serving for worship, but it is still the setting for the annual procession of the Senhor dos Passos (Lord of the Steps). It was here that, in 1982, the first exhibition of archaeological objects from the excavation of the Alcáçova de Mértola was presented to the public. The Sacred Art branch opened in 2001.
The collection brings together painting, sacred sculpture and goldsmith work which, for reasons of conservation and security, were removed from various churches in the municipality of Mértola. The branch is one of the fourteen of the Museu de Mértola – Cláudio Torres.
