About the museum
The Islamic Art branch opened on 21 December 2001 in an old granary next to the Porta da Ribeira, which was the main route to the old port of Mértola. It presents the results of forty years of study and conservation of materials from the Islamic period, most of them recovered in the excavations of the Alcáçova de Mértola.
The collection covers the 9th to 13th centuries and brings together a wide variety of objects: architectural elements, funerary inscriptions, ceramics, metal and glass. Coordination, design and content were the responsibility of Cláudio Torres and Santiago Macias, with a broad team of researchers, inventory staff and conservators.
It is one of the fourteen branches of the Museu de Mértola – Cláudio Torres and one of two that charge admission, together with the Torre de Menagem of the castle. In 2021 it marked twenty years since it opened.
