About the museum
The painter José Cercas (1914–1992), a native of Aljezur, bequeathed his house and his entire estate to the Municipality of Aljezur, on condition that a house museum be set up there to perpetuate his memory and his work. The house museum opened in 1995.
A collector of antique pieces, José Cercas assembled over his lifetime a valuable collection, now displayed in the museum: earthenware, sacred art, sculptures and furniture, to which are added several paintings and drawings by him and by international artists.
At the painter's request, the arrangement he gave the house while he lived there was respected, including the recreation of his studio. Today the house museum is part of the circuit of museums in Aljezur's historic centre.
