About the museum
The Moinho de Odeceixe stands on Serro da Igreja, a high point in the village, and is a testimony to the importance windmills once had in this part of the Algarve. In Portugal, windmills appeared around the 14th century and were concentrated mainly in the south of the country, where they were used to grind wheat, maize and other cereals.
To safeguard this heritage, the Municipality of Aljezur restored the Odeceixe mill. Inside, the entire traditional grinding process can be observed as the miller carried it out, attentive to the direction of the wind and responsible for all the grinding tasks.
From the site there are wide views over the white houses of Odeceixe, the floodplain and the Seixe stream.
