About the museum
The Museu de Arte Sacra occupies the former hospital of the Misericórdia of Aljezur, built at the end of the 18th century and annexed to the Church of the Misericórdia. After serving as a hospital, the building was used as a residential home for older people until 1997, and the museum space opened in 2000.
The museum honours Monsignor Manuel Francisco Pardal, born in Aljezur in 1896 and died in 1979, a priest, teacher and writer, author of three books, including the novel “Gente da Serra”.
The collection brings together pieces from the Misericórdia of Aljezur and the Parish of Nossa Senhora da Alva, together with gifts and acquisitions. It is arranged in display cases according to the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church, from Advent to Ordinary Time. Highlights include an Indo-Portuguese ivory Christ, an image of Our Lady of Solitude and a painting of Moses.
