About the museum
The chapel of Santo António was built in Aljezur's historic centre in the 17th century, after 1628, the year in which the Brotherhood of Santo António was authorised. It was almost entirely destroyed by the 1755 earthquake and served as the parish church immediately after the quake. In 1792 the bishop decided to rebuild it, and in 1809 the chapel was desecrated.
From then on, with few alterations, it served as a dwelling until it was acquired by the Municipality of Aljezur, which set up a museum on the Saint Anthony theme there, in homage to Saint Anthony, born in Lisbon in 1195 and very popular among the Portuguese.
The collection is mainly of sacred art dating from the 19th and 20th centuries, but it also includes significant seventeenth- and eighteenth-century pieces.
