About the museum
The Museu Municipal de Aljezur occupies the former building of the Câmara Municipal (town council), built in the 19th century in the historic centre of the town. When the council moved to new premises, the old Paços do Concelho (town hall) was converted into a museum.
The collection is spread across three spaces. The Archaeological Unit brings together objects documenting more than 10,000 years of human presence in the region, from the end of the Ice Age to the Bronze Age, with highlights such as Mirense axes, slate plaques and net weights. Here one can also see the Pedra de Armas (heraldic stone) of the Order of Santiago, believed to come from the old parish church destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, and the shaft of the former pillory.
The Ethnographic Unit shows agricultural, livestock and fishing tools from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and recreates rural settings, such as an Algarve bedroom and kitchen. The Sala do Legado Andalusino (Andalusian Legacy Room) presents materials from the Islamic period, mainly ceramics from the Sítio da Barrada, accompanied by information on their everyday use.
