About the museum
The Casa del Conde was the home of Ricardo Jaime Pinto da Costa, a Portuguese businessman and consul in La Fregeneda, to whom Queen Regent María Cristina granted the title of Count of Lumbrales in 1888 for promoting the railway between La Fuente de San Esteban and Barca d’Alba. The building, in the Modernist style with Portuguese influence, was erected at the end of the 19th century and has two floors and a garden. The Lumbrales town council acquired it on 24 February 1968.
Today it houses the Visitor Reception Centre and the tourist office of the Territorio Vetón. On the ground floor, a room recreates the setting of Pinto da Costa, with audiovisuals about his life, the railway and the hillfort (castro) of Las Merchanas. On the upper floor is a room of the archaeological museum, set up in 2013 with finds gathered by Ignacio and Eduardo Pérez Fernández, many of them pre-Roman from the Las Merchanas hillfort, and a 20th-century loom.
In two rooms next to the courtyard, opened in May 2019, are displayed the scale models by retired carpenter Agustín Villoria: the parish church, the clock tower and the Humilladero hermitage, as well as seven traditional trades (carpentry, bricklaying, forge, vegetable garden, mill, wine press and loom), many of them with moving parts.
