About the museum

The Museo dello Sport e dell’Olimpismo is an initiative of the Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Sammarinese (CONS) and is located in Serravalle, in the north stand of the Stadio Olimpico di San Marino. It traces the history of Sammarinese sport from its beginnings to the present day through objects donated by former athletes and recovered from various parts of the world, images, information and archive documents that tell the story of Olympic participation, events and key figures.

Among the pieces on display are the torch, uniforms and documents from the first Olympic Games in which San Marino took part, in Rome in 1960, with the original invitation signed by Giulio Andreotti; the rifle with which Ettore Stacchini set a world record for endurance in clay pigeon shooting; the bicycles of Nello Giri; the “scaranine” (early sledges) used in the 1940s as forerunners of the sled; the two-man bobsleigh from the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics; and memorabilia of Manuel Poggiali and Alex De Angelis. There are also collections of sports stamps and coins, and the Albi d’Oro (Golden Books) listing the medal winners at the Games of the Small States of Europe and the Mediterranean Games.

Two multimedia stations allow visitors to consult the profiles of all Sammarinese athletes, with photos and period films digitised from Super 8 reels, which can be watched on a large screen in the area. At the entrance visitors are greeted by Pierre de Coubertin’s motto in three languages, a giant photograph of the 1960 Rome delegation and the image of San Marino’s first football team, the “Titania”.
