About the museum
The Slovak National Gallery was established in 1948 by an act of the Slovak National Council and began work as an institute at the start of the 1950s. The core of the collections came from works taken over from the Slovak Museum and from the former Commissariat for Education, Science and Arts.
The gallery is housed in the Baroque Water Barracks on the Danube embankment, built in 1759–1763. In 1969–1977 they were joined by a modern extension designed by the architect Vladimír Dedeček. Today's complex combines the Water Barracks, the neo-Renaissance Esterházy Palace, architecture from the 1970s and a new extension. After a seven-year reconstruction, it reopened at the end of 2022.
The collections contain more than 90,000 works, from Gothic art to contemporary visual art: painting, sculpture, drawing, graphic art, photography, video, design and architecture. The SNG also includes sites outside Bratislava: Zvolen Castle, Strážky Manor House, the Schaubmar Mill in Pezinok and the Ľudovít Fulla Gallery in Ružomberok.
