About the museum

The first gasworks producing town gas on the territory of present-day Slovakia was established in Bratislava in 1856 and provided lighting for the city. A new gasworks was built in 1936 on Mlynské nivy, and part of its surviving buildings now houses the museum.

The basis of the collection was formed by the long-standing collecting activities of former employees of the Bratislava gasworks. The first public step was the exhibition “Vo svetle plynových lámp” (In the Light of Gas Lamps) in 1992. The gas museum was founded by the state enterprise Slovenský plynárenský priemysel in March 1996, and since 2007 it has been called the Slovenské plynárenské múzeum.

The exhibitions are divided into several parts. The History Pavilion describes the production and use of town gas; the Procurist's Office shows the environment of the most important official of the gasworks at the beginning of the 20th century; and the Laboratory documents operational control. Since late 2010 the museum has also included an outdoor exhibition of historically valuable gas installations in full size and replicas of gas street lamps. The Pavilion of the Present is complemented by an interactive exhibition on energy.
