About the museum
The construction of the Liptovská Mara water reservoir triggered extensive archaeological research, one of the longest in the history of Slovak archaeology. The Havránok hill attracted people already in prehistoric times; later Svätá Mara was an ecclesiastical centre and, in the 14th century, also the centre of Liptov county. In the Late Iron Age a hillfort arose here, which protected the only sanctuary of the culture found to date, a sanctuary that developed under the influence of arriving Celts. The Púchov culture was placed in the settlement history of northern Slovakia thanks to the research of Karol Pieta.
The open-air museum was established in the early 1990s. The architecture of the fortifications, the sanctuary and the medieval fortified stronghold remained in their original place, while the residential buildings, emergency dwellings on the hillfort and the settlement courtyard were built according to archaeological finds. Because of great public interest, the Liptovské múzeum set up a permanent guiding service in 1995.
