About the museum
The Skautské múzeum in Ružomberok was founded on 22 February 1997. Its aim was to preserve records of scouting activity in Central Europe and, after the years of isolation of the Eastern Bloc, to bring the life of the scout movement in the individual national organisations closer to young people. The founder of the museum was Václav Rubeš, after whom the museum is named today.
The museum is located in the centre of Ružomberok on Námestie slobody, in the so-called Björnson House. Its collections document the development of world and Slovak scouting and present badges, decorations, flags, parts of uniforms, insignia, chronicles, photographs, postcards and scout philately. A separate section is devoted to the activity of Czech and Slovak scouts in exile.
The museum also has a specialised archive library with a reading room, a photo library, a film library and other collections, which are used mainly by students and scout members. The collections comprise approximately 13,000 objects and are often presented at exhibitions outside the museum.
