About the museum
Banka lásky (Bank of Love) is an experience house dedicated to Sládkovič's “Marína”, the longest love poem in the world. Sládkovič wrote it in 1846 and gave the manuscript to Marína when she had already been married to another man for a year. Marína kept it secretly until her death in 1899, in the house on the square in Banská Štiavnica. Today the Banka lásky is in this house. In 2021 it was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA).
On 18 March 2023 part of the UNESCO-listed square in Banská Štiavnica burned, and the fire also destroyed Marína's House (Dom Maríny). The world's only Vault of Love (Trezor lásky), underground in the house, remained untouched, but because the building is being reconstructed, the public cannot enter it and new boxes are not being set up. The museum's creators plan to rebuild the house from the ground up.
