About the museum

Starý zámok (Old Castle) stands above Námestie sv. Trojice at the foot of the Paradajz hill and is one of the oldest architectural monuments in Banská Štiavnica. The building was originally a Romanesque church, which gradually became a massive town castle, so it documents Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles.

The exhibitions of the Slovenské banské múzeum present archaeological finds from the surroundings of Sitno and the old town, bronze jewellery and tools from around 900 BC, and the history of the town, including a charter from 1275. Also notable are the model of the altar by Master M. S. from 1506, Baroque sculptures, a lapidarium and a presentation of well-known Banská Štiavnica crafts, such as artistic blacksmithing and historic clocks. The newer exhibition Na muške in a monumental wooden structure shows shooting targets from the town's shooting range.
