About the museum
The Novohradské múzeum was established in 1955 as the Okresné vlastivedné múzeum (District Local History Museum) in the castle in Halič. From 1967 to 1985 it was based in Fiľakovo, and since 1985 it has been housed in a monument-protected building in the historic centre of Lučenec. The gallery was attached to the museum in 2004. The founding body is the Banskobystrický samosprávny kraj.
The collection fund comprises more than 30,000 objects from archaeology, ethnology, history and fine art. The museum specialises in the fragile history of Novohrad, especially glass, ceramics and enamelware. Among the most valuable are collections of folk ceramics, enamelled tableware and historical glass; among the archaeological finds, the bronze hoard from Hodejov is well known. The gallery collection includes works by artists connected with Lučenec and its surroundings.
The institution organises the Trienále akvarelu (Watercolour Triennial) and, since 1989, the Medzinárodné keramické sympózium Lučenec – Kalinovo (International Ceramics Symposium Lučenec – Kalinovo), which is the oldest continuously running event of its kind in Slovakia. Part of the works from the symposium enrich the collection of contemporary art ceramics. The grounds also include an art garden.
