About the museum

The manor house was built from the foundations in 1677 by the Croatian nobleman Mikuláš Draskovich (some sources also give the year 1668). He married Countess Barbora Drugethová, granddaughter of Alžbeta Báthoryová, and the manor house also takes its name from him. At the beginning of the 18th century it was acquired by the Forgáč family, who owned it the longest, for more than 140 years; in 1852 the Čenkay family bought it from them. In the 19th and early 20th centuries the manor house served as a night shelter for the poor, which had an adverse effect on its condition.

In 2021 to 2024 the manor house underwent a complete reconstruction with support from the EEA and Norway Grants. Today it is managed by the Trenčianske múzeum (Trenčín Museum) in Trenčín and serves as the Čachtice museum of history, with modern interactive exhibitions on three floors.

In the basement there is an exhibition on Alžbeta Báthoryová with a talking painting and a holographic theatre, and an exhibition on winemaking. The ground floor presents the history of Čachtice, Habán ceramics, Roma culture and the fourth meeting of the Tatrín society in 1847. On the upper floor is an exhibition of the noble household culture with a music salon, a library with secret doors and a children's room.
