About the museum
The first museum exhibition in Stará Turá was opened in 1976 in the building of the former Roman Catholic school as the Izba revolučných tradícií (Room of Revolutionary Traditions). Since 2005 the Mestské múzeum has been housed in the Javorina Culture House; in 2016 it was comprehensively modernised and moved to the ground floor of the building.
The museum focuses on the history of the town and the Podjavorinie region. Among its oldest exhibits are fossils, remains of Quaternary mammals, archaeological finds from the Stone and Bronze Ages, and a skull of the pratur (aurochs), after which the town is named. Valuable is a document from 1392 in which Stará Turá is first mentioned, as well as royal documents from the 17th and 18th centuries.
The ethnographic section is devoted to crafts, guilds, trade and local costumes. Other sections document schooling, the year 1848, the First World War, the fate of the Jewish community and the SNP in the Podjavorinie region. A separate exhibition presents the history of the former Chirana company, the largest manufacturer of medical technology in Czechoslovakia. An outlying exhibition is the period room Tradičné bývanie (Traditional Dwelling).
