About the museum
The Podjavorinské múzeum in Nové Mesto nad Váhom was founded in 1950. Since the early 1970s it has been a specialised branch of the Trenčín Museum in Trenčín, focused on historical and local-history research, in particular research into literary history.
It is housed in a Baroque building from the second half of the 18th century, known as the Gilány House or Gilániovec after one of its owners. The exhibition is devoted to the history of Nové Mesto and its surroundings, to its culture and traditions, and is divided into sections on archaeology, history, ethnography and the history of craft guilds; a separate section presents the church history of the region.
Among the valuable exhibits is a faithful copy of the Gothic Koryčany or Beckov Madonna. Folk culture is represented by the interior of a peasant room from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Habán faience, Trenčín ceramics, agricultural tools and folk costumes, as well as the tradition of viticulture and winemaking.
