About the museum
The Kremnica mint began its story on 17 November 1328, when the Hungarian King Charles Robert of Anjou elevated Kremnica to a free royal town and granted it the privilege of operating a mint. The mint has produced almost continuously for nearly seven centuries and is one of about eighty enterprises of its kind in the world. In the 14th century the gold Hungarian ducat and the florin began to be minted here, and in 1710 the Swedish medallist Daniel Warou introduced the spindle minting press, the balancier.
The shop and exhibition of the state-owned enterprise Mincovňa Kremnica are housed in almost 600-year-old reconstructed premises from 1430. Visitors walk through an exhibition of medals, circulation coins and commemorative coins, see the old minting hall and can strike a commemorative token on the balancier. The Mincovňa Kremnica is the last place in Europe where Vulkan minting presses are still used in production today; the preserved set is a technical monument of transnational significance.
