About the museum

The museum in Kremnica is among the oldest museum institutions in Slovakia. The town kept valuable objects such as the so-called klenoty (treasures); the oldest written mention of them dates from 1724, and even then a large part of them consisted of coins and medals, reflecting the rich tradition of Kremnica minting. The museum was officially founded in 1890 by the archivist and historian Pavol Križko; in 1955 the museum separated from the archive.

In 1976 the museum was transformed into the specialised nationwide Museum of Coins and Medals. In 1983 the tradition of Kremnica medallists' symposia began there. Since 1 April 1994 it has been part of the National Bank of Slovakia. For the exhibition Líce a rub peňazí it received the Museum of the Year award in 2003.

The museum manages several visitor sites: the exhibition Líce a rub peňazí in a Gothic burgher house on the main square; the Town Castle complex from the 14th and 15th centuries, with double fortifications, the Church of St Catherine and the Gothic charnel house (karner) of St Andrew; and the Burgher House with long-term exhibitions. The castle took its present form after the neo-Gothic restoration of 1883–1886.
