About the museum
This two-storey craftsman's house, originally a dyers' workshop, was built in the 18th century in the historic centre of Dolný Kubín. From the end of the 19th century it served only as a residence. After the town fire of 1893 it was acquired by the Orava historian Jozef Kohúth, who lived in it until his death in 1900; later it belonged to the Herkeľ family.
From 1953 to 1973 the poet, publicist and cultural worker Teodor Herkeľ Florin lived here; he was instrumental in the nationwide art recitation competition Hviezdoslavov Kubín. Since 1997 his memorial room has been open to visitors, with its original furnishings, poetry collections and personal belongings.
The other spaces are used by the Oravské múzeum (Orava Museum) for short-term thematic exhibitions.
