About the museum

The Museum of Noble Carriages and Sleighs began its history on 1 May 2008 and stands in the village of Oravský Podzámok, directly below Orava Castle. The collection was built up through long-term collecting and meticulous restoration, and according to the museum it is the largest of its kind in Slovakia.

Visitors can see 21 exhibits in their original but mostly restored condition: luxurious landaus and landaulets, elegant mylords for gentlemen and victorias for ladies, city coupés, hunting carriages and sleighs for snowy winters. The exhibition is complemented by explanatory texts and mannequins in historical costumes.

Among the newer acquisitions is a richly decorated noble funeral carriage, five metres long and almost three metres high; another, neo-Baroque funeral carriage is being restored.
