About the museum
The Oravská galéria was founded on 3 November 1965 and was initially seated in Oravský Podzámok, without a basic collection and without its own premises. The preparatory committee included, among others, Ctibor Belan, Jozef Mlynarčík and Mária Medvecká. Within its first two years the gallery acquired 1,920 exhibits and took over the administration of the late Gothic wooden churches in Tvrdošín and Zábrež.
In 1970 it moved to the building of the Župný dom on Hviezdoslavovo námestie in Dolný Kubín, where it still serves today. From a gallery focused on the art of the region it gradually became an institution with nationwide scope; its collections are among the most numerous and most significant among the regional galleries in Slovakia.
Today the gallery also operates through outlying exhibitions in three districts of Orava: the Slanický ostrov umenia (Slanica Island of Art) near Námestovo, the Galéria Márie Medveckej (Mária Medvecká Gallery) in Tvrdošín and the Plátennícky dom (Linen Weavers' House) in Štefanov nad Oravou. It also operates the motor ship OG Slanica. The founding body is the Žilina Self-Governing Region.
