About the museum
The P. O. Hviezdoslav Literary Museum was officially opened on 13 November 1954, on the 33rd anniversary of the poet's funeral. Its seat became the historic building of the Čaplovič Library on Hviezdoslavovo námestie (Hviezdoslav Square) in Dolný Kubín. In 1980 the museum merged with the Oravské vlastivedné múzeum (Orava Regional Museum), creating today's Oravské múzeum (Orava Museum), to which the literary exhibition belongs.
The exhibition in three rooms presents the life and work of Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav (1849–1921), one of the most important Slovak realist authors. Texts and pictorial material are complemented by personal relics from his estate: his study, part of the salon, clothing, gifts from anniversaries and personal items. The exhibition is complemented by art pieces (protisy) by the painter Eva Trizuljaková, inspired by the Krvavé sonety (Bloody Sonnets), and by period furniture.
In the same building is the exhibition of the Čaplovič Library, devoted to the collection of Vavrinec Čaplovič, which he donated to Orava County in 1839. In front of the building stands a bronze statue of Hviezdoslav by the sculptor Fraňo Štefunko.
